Until its closure a few years ago Minera Quarry had been the sole survivor from many enterprises which exploited the local geology. Considerable amounts of limestone have been extracted from the early nineteenth century onwards, much of which was burnt to produce lime that was used in the local iron industry. Latterly the bulk of the rock from Minera was used as aggregate for road construction. The landscape of the site is quite varied with some of the older parts already re-vegetated whilst the more recent workings are still mainly bare. The older parts are home to a wide variety of plant life and many different bird species and in fact is included in the Ruabon, Llantysilio and Minera Site of Special Scientific Interest. The trust aims to conserve and develop many of the unique features of the site including its geological, industrial and natural history. |
