AIMS
1. To conserve and develop the natural, industrial, historical and geological features for the pleasure and enjoyment of individuals. 2. To enhance the accessibility for all, including young, old, disabled etc 3. To provide additional recreational facilities without detracting from the natural sanctuary of the area. 4. To enhance and enrich the lives of the local community. 5. To provide a visitor centre with limited parking areas, along with paths, trails and picnic areas.
BACKGROUND
The quarry in Minera provided a livelihood for many locals for over 150 years, until its closure in 1993. The site was left denuded by the quarrying activities, but is gradually regenerating spontaneously. As a result of this process, it has become an area where people enjoy leisure activities, such as walking, exercising dogs, photography, wildlife spotting and communing with nature. The quarry has educational properties, due to the large and diverse range of features; e.g. flora, fauna, industrial history, archaeology, speleology.
THEMES TO DEVELOP
1. Provide a visitor centre, with an indoor meeting-place, 2. Improve footpaths and increase the defined areas of accessibility. 3. Provide information boards. 4. Provide picnic areas. 5. Increase the safety of the area. 6. Consider the provision of a flat area for leisure activities, such as football, tennis, archery etc, 7. Reinstate the natural wilderness appeal by regeneration of original plants. 8. Maintenance of all amenities and facilities. 9. Publicity to foster knowledge of the quarry within the wider community.
MEANS
1. Undertake a feasibility study of the whole site. 2. Formulate a phased implementation plan. 3. Act as a focal point for all the other suggested developments within the quarry. 4. Develop links with other trails and features within the area; e.g. the WCBC Clywedog Trail, the Offa’s Dyke Trail, the Llandegla Forest Visitor Centre and the Brymbo Historical Site.
